My Update to Healing Well & Feeling Better

As exciting it may be to see positive changes annd improvements with my digestion and bloated tummy, deep down I still question if it’s too good to be true, and whether or not this is going to end soon…

Recently I had changed my supplementation for supporting low stomach acid (a digestive enzymes & betaine HCL) to ones that had a stronger dosage and a few extra ingredients that were required for optimal results in breaking down foods consumed.

For a week or so, things felt beyond amazing. I felt light, full of energy, less bloated and started to see weight shift off me… However, I had this very same feeling the first time I ever incorporated enzymes and HCL into my life, then things stalled and all my symptons came back. It was kinda like someone giving you a million dollars in cash then they just take it away from you in a matter of seconds, before you even got to touch it!

That moment in time clouded my mind, I tried not to think about it but I was waiting for the day for this new supplements to just.. stop.. working… that it did. I’m bloated again, feel slighty lethargic and am not as regular, even when I was just as regular before it all!
I again just felt and still do feel so disheartened, depressed, self conscious and hopeless – a bunch of recurring emotions might I add.

Healing your gut issues will be a roller coaster ride, until you have fully recovered once and for all. The process to that day may not take as quickly as you’d like because there will be underlying issues… BUT with a positive perspective, at least it will allow you to learn more about yourself, your body, and more about optimal good gut health.

Currently I have made a few changes with my diet and supplementation, only because digestive enzymes and betaine hcl is not the end all answer to all my problems, or anyone in a similar situation. Why? Because if you gut has bad bacteria, that will 100% get the better of you, or there may be more to just taking enzymes.
For instance, bad bacteria will affect basically everything in your digestive tract/ intestines, which will bring on all the symptons you have been dealing with, plus affect your overall health – mental and physical state.

UPDATE

My naturopath has put me on a LOW CARBOHYDRATE DIET. Only in the last 4-6 weeks had I increased my calories, upped my carbohydrates and protein and lowered my fats to support my body with the fuel it needs whilst strength training 6 x per week and for a goal in sight. I had previously also been living in a calorie deficit, so I needed to awaken and restore my metabolism with an increase of more good food!

  • CARBS INTAKE
    Why low carbs? Because if you eat too many carbs (and sugary foods) – bad bacteria will feed off this, thereby not killing off them off which will promote the production of gas, which will simply make matters worse. I will eat non-starchy carbs & other starches for the next 2 weeks. I will mainly eat green leafy veggies (steamed/cooked, as it is easier for the body to digest, just make sure not over cooked as this will kill of all nutritional value),  I will avoid some vegetables that I already know don’t work for me… but in time I may incorporate them again to see if my body can handle them better than before.
  • PROTEIN INTAKE
    I have decreased my protein intake. Because also, if you overeat protein this stimulates more acid secretions that can make the problem worse. Protein is already a food group that is not as easy to digest and breakdown for the body if you suffer from low stomach acid. It requires greater stomach acid, so it’s best to serve smaller portions. As this is one of my issues, I should be increasing my stomach acid FIRST, then increase my protein only once I can start properly breaking down the minimum protein requirements for my body. White meat and fish are easier to digest than red meat – that is a known and proven fact. You will be able to tell straight away if red meat doesnt suit you well. Symptons persist of feeling heavy in the stomach, tired and really bloated.
  • FATS INTAKE
    Good and healthy fats are not farmful to your body, in fact eating fish is probably the best bet. This includes salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines. As well as supplementing with Omega-3 fish oils, as it is known to be a powerful anti-inflammatory. Nuts and seeds are actually encouraged to eat, however I would avoid peanuts as they are part of the “mold” family, they have a toxic mold called Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus.

    Whilst this is going to be my change in macros over the next couple of weeks, I will have to reduce my carbs and protein, whilst increasing my fat intake, which will overall lower my total calorie intake. This is not what my intention had been in terms of getting more food in to restore my metabolism, but it is important for me to restore my gut health more. So, tracking calories isn’t really my concern for the time being. What else I will make be changing up:

  • Limit to 1 x coffee per day
  • Drink ginger tea, limit green/peppermint tea to 3 x per day
  • Eat pineapple and papaya (by itself and if consumed then only as the first meal in the AM)
  • LOTS of leafy green vegetables, avoiding cruceferous vegetables and also fermented
  • Ensuring nothing is eaten raw, only boiled or steamed, just not overcooked.
  • Wash vegetables and fruit thoroughly
  • Eat plenty of oily fish and limit white meat, avoiding red meat
  • Wash hands thoroughly before eating
  • Prioritize sleep +7hrs per day
  • Drink +4L per day (very important)
  • De-stress
  • Mindfully eat – 20+ chews per bite
  • Finishing off ATP Science’s GutRight 10 day Protocol (I will write up a post of how it went after I finish it next weekend)


SUPPLEMENTATION

Currently these are the supplementation I am taking. Not all in one go – spread out in the day. I will go into further details of these supps in another post but I will briefly touch on the reasons for each one.

  • Digestive Enzymes – to breakdown protein, carbs, fiber and fats and support optimal digestion by helping the body absorb nutrients and convert food into energy.
  • Betaine HCL – to relieve bloating, gas or belching after meals i.e. indigestion and increase low stomach acid.
  • Probiotics – improve gut integrity and feed good bacteria.
  • L-Glutamine – an amino acid for healing a leaky gut by generating healthy epithelial cells, which line the digestion tract.
  • Fish Oil/ Omega-3’s – for calming down gut inflammation
  • Curcumin – powerful anti-inflammatory for gut
  • Vitamin D 5000IU – restores good bacteria in the gut and supports healthy immune, heart, teeth and bones
  • Zinc – supports enzymes and stomach acid for a healthy gut
  • Cort RX – reduces cortisol and inflammation
  • Magnesium – helps cells produce metabolic energy and helps muscles relax
  • Bactrex – contains specific herbs to maintain upper intestinal health
  • Gut Flora Dysbiosis – replenishes natural stores of beneficial gut bacteria while eliminating problematic bacteria, parasites, and yeast overgrowths
  • GutRight formula (which is a 10 day protocol on a low carb diet so perfect timing) this is a formula designed to kill off any bad bacterias in the digestive tract

All these supplements have been prescribed to ME by a naturopath, so I highly advise seeking medical guidance before assuming this is what will work for you, because if you do not suffer from the issues I do, some of these supps will only do more harm than good, be a waste of your money and will not resolve your issue.
